Recovery after Vasectomy Reversal Surgery

You have had your pre-op appointment with your urologist; necessary tests done, you have talked with the urology surgeon and the anesthetist concerning your Vasectomy Reversal. You were wondering how long the procedure may take and what the recovery period will entail. Through your consultations you learned what is expected, but let’s review the post-op process, just to make sure you clearly understand it and are well prepared.

The good news is a vasectomy reversal doesn’t require an overnight stay in the hospital; it is generally an outpatient procedure. After the surgery is completed you will be taken to the outpatient surgery center, so you can recover from the affects of the anesthesia, your vitals can be checked and pain management begun.

Will it be Painful After Vasectomy Reversal Surgery?

How Will I Manage the Pain?

The pain associated with a vasectomy reversal is much like the discomfort you may have experienced after your vasectomy. The pain is easy to manage, by placing an ice pack on your scrotum area, to reduce the swelling and pain; you will feel less discomfort and heal faster. Your urologist may prescribe a pain medication for the first two days of your recovery, which can be taken as needed. After that you may take any over the counter medication such as Tylenol, to ease any minor pain on the third day and beyond. Consult with your urologist concerning the use of aspirin; for some it can increase bleeding.

When Can I Return to Work after Vasectomy Reversal Surgery?

You will be able to return to work after 3 days of recovery- if you have a job in an office setting. Strenuous activity should be avoided until your urologist gives you the okay. If your job involves lifting, bending, pulling, pushing or climbing you will be able to return to work after 4 weeks.
