After the procedure you will remain in the recovery room for a few hours or until you feel up to traveling. Be sure to have someone there to assist you and drive you home. Avoid driving for at least 48 hours after the surgery. In some cases a patient may go home with some drains placed in your scrotum during the reversal. These drains will be removed the next day by your urologist. If there are no drains, then your first appointment will be scheduled for follow up care will be within two weeks.

What Should I Expect after vasectomy reversal?

You may feel some mild to moderate pain and discomfort for the first 2 to 3 weeks. Pain medication prescribed by your urologist and ice packs will help to ease the pain and swelling.

Don’t be alarmed if you notice a small amount of blood in your urine for a day or two, this is normal. Excessive levels of blood in your urine will require immediate attention, please contact the clinic, so you can be seen right away.

You will receive and be asked to wear an athletic support which you will wear day and night, even while sleeping, for 3 weeks. Lifting heavy objects, climbing stairs and strenuous work should be avoided for 3 weeks and avoid sex for 4 weeks. Following your urology surgeons directions will help you towards a complication free and more comfortable recovery period.
