Recovery after Vasectomy Reversal Surgery

After thinking for long, you have finally decided to get a vasectomy reversal surgery. You are going to book appointments and do preparations for the surgery. But before you go ahead, you must know what recovery steps are and how long will it take. It will help you plan your days accordingly, and you will know when you will get back to the normal routine after the surgery. Here is everything you need to know about the vasectomy reversal recovery.

How Long Does the Recovery Take?

Vasectomy reversal recovery can take anywhere between five and fourteen days. The recovery time varies from person to person. The recovery time also depends upon whether you have vasovasostomy or Vasoepididymostomy as the reversal procedure. Vasoepididymostomy takes longer to recover.

Your sperm flow will not restore immediately after your recovery. It usually takes four to six months for the sperm to start flowing in your semen. In case of Vasoepididymostomy, it can take between six to twelve months or even longer. Your doctor will examine your semen fluid samples every month. This way, you and your partner will know the correct time to start trying for the pregnancy.

What Happens Right After the Surgery?

Your doctor will cover the incisions with bandages after the surgery. The stitches usually dissolve between seven to ten days. But you must ask your doctor when you can remove the bandages. For the next 24 hours, you should apply an ice pack to relieve yourself from the pain and swelling.

It is normal to feel a bruised and swollen groin for the next three days. Keep applying the ice pack on the groin.  It will take as long as one to two weeks for the swelling to finish.

What to do During the Recovery?

For the next 24 hours after the surgery, lie down as much as you can. Rest well for the next five days. Getting enough sleep will help in quick recovery. You must not lift heavy objects and do any physical activity that requires strain for one or two weeks. This includes lifting a child, heavy grocery bags, milk containers, heavy briefcase or, etc.

Avoid jogging, biking, or aerobic exercise. Do take a walk for the next seven days after the surgery. Walking helps to boost your blow flow and avoid your chances of getting constipation. Walk a little bit more than the previous day.

You should not have sex at least for three weeks after the surgery or till your doctor gives you a clear call. Wear an athletic support undergarment following the seven days. It will provide support and help keep your bandages at the place.

If you are on medications, then discuss with your doctor. You must avoid taking blood-thinners such as aspirin. Taking blood thinning medication can cause bleeding after the surgery. Take medicines according to your doctor’s instructions. Do not self medicate if the pain is severe. Ask your doctor to give you over the counter medicines for pain.

If your doctor prescribes you antibiotics, then take them as the doctor has directed. Do not stop taking the antibiotics if you feel better. It is important to complete the course, or you have chances of developing infections.

You will be able to get back to work probably within a week depending upon your recovery time and work type. If your work involves heavy lifting or strenuous activities, then wait for two weeks to get back to work.
